A Career in Real Estate
A devoted family man and outdoor enthusiast, Dave has worked hard to build a career he loves in a city he loves. His passion for real estate began in his 20s when he built houses and sold to build the next. This experience as a young investor paved the way for a career as a REALTOR® in years to come. Dave describes his process of becoming an agent: “I was very interested. However, I had a wife, two kids, and a mortgage. I was scared to make the leap into commission income. After selling a business I was an owner in, I started looking at real estate as a career. I asked my previous business partner to join me and he did. That started the Thompson Godfrey Group at RE/MAX of Nanaimo and we never looked back. I was excited and felt I knew a lot about the reality of what people needed to know about real estate transactions.”

The natural trajectory of Dave’s official licensing as a REALTOR® and his growth since then has provided him with career satisfaction, assurance, and an understanding of how to manage commission income. He explains how his views of success and money have changed throughout his career: “At first I was money-driven and that was how I measured success. But not long in, I discovered that in taking care of your clients first and foremost, the money follows.” The client relationships Dave fostered became one of the most inspiring aspects of the business for him. “To stay inspired is easy when you are helping people reach their goals,” he says. “My repeat and referral business also keeps me inspired. There is no bigger compliment than your clients referring you to their families and friends.”

Dave’s aspiration to connect with people and create meaningful relationships has been an important ingredient to his success and happiness as a REALTOR® . He describes his relationships with colleagues: “I look at real estate agents as allies, not competition. Giving help or receiving help from fellow agents is easy and common. I have developed a strong referral network up and down the island, in parts of the mainland, and beyond. I’ve made some wonderful friendships along the way as well.” Dave also attributes his success to the support received from the brokerage: “RE/MAX as a company has been a great support for education and offers a ton of training opportunities. Children’s Miracle Network
As a member of RE/MAX of Nanaimo, Dave and all agents contribute a portion of each sale to the Children’s Miracle Network. “I am so happy that RE/MAX of Nanaimo is supporting CMN,” Dave expresses. “Even throughout COVID we have still been contributing a lot of money. I had the privilege of taking a tour and saw how CMN put the funds to use, and it was incredible.”
Dave has served on many community boards including the Hospital Foundation, Rotary Daybreak, a steering committee for VIU, as director at VIREB, past president of Seauxmen Service Club, and as a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Dave relates, “All of these organizations have helped me become a better leader, given me a more open mind, and have been places where I’ve met some of my best friends.”
When Dave is not working, he enjoys lots of family time with his children and four grandchildren. He often hikes with his dog in the mornings before work and loves boating, skiing, travelling, and cycling.
